Disease Fact's:
Eye Disorder-
 *PINGUECULA*

It is a yellowish benign raised patch with grows on the white of your eye - the sclera - usually at the 3 or 9 o'clock position(the parts exposed to the sun). It's development is linked to exposure to UV rays from sunlight, dust and wind.
It is more common in older people.
Pinguecula is usually accompanied by eye dryness (since the raised patch does not allow for even spread of tears on the eye's surface), sandy/gritty feeling in the eye, itching, burning sensation and foreign body sensation.

A pinguecula may become inflamed when there is excessive exposure to the factors mentioned earlier.

To prevent risk of pinguecula growth, wear sunglasses or photochromic lenses when you go outdoors.

Pinguecula does not usually grow towards the cornea so it does not interfere with one's field of vision. However, if this is so, it interferes with contact lens wearing out it is cosmetically worrisome, it could be surgically removed.

If inflamed, steroidal eye drops or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed.

Pinguecula is most at time, confused with pteryguim which will be discussed in the next post.
